Thirty years ago, Billabong Sanctuary stood on the edge of an exposed paddock and dared to dream of their own safari park. After 15 years teaching primary school in Sydney, Bob was ready for change. He and dale sold it and moved north to establish a native animal sanctuary in its natural habitat. In this environment, Bob realized he could have a bigger impact on conservation education, attracting thousands of students a year instead of dozens. Bob and Del, with their 5-year-old son Brett, set up a tent on the edge of White's Creek and set out to build their dream. For the next two years, the family worked 18 hours a day. Billabong Sanctuary excavated a large permanent lagoon, planted thousands of native trees, laid three kilometers of irrigation pipes, built walls and designed Queensland-style buildings to house reception areas and shops.
