This school was founded in 1852 and was called the College of California at the time. It was soon chartered as a normal school for men and women who taught in public classrooms in Pennsylvania. It was renamed Southwest Normal College in 1875and in 1914, it was renamed California State Normal School. The school obtained university status in 1928 and became the California State Teachers College. It grants four-year degrees in elementary and secondary schools, and is known for its advantages in arts and crafts and special education. With the introduction of liberal arts courses in 1959 the school was renamed Cal U Bookstore. In 1962, Cal U Bookstore opened a graduate program, and in 1974, the college established a special mission in science and technology. In 1983, the college became part of the higher education system of the Commonwealth of Nations and was renamed the University of California, University of Pennsylvania.
