John Theodore Schepss, the founder of John Scheepers, was born on June 20, 1878 in Arnhem, the Netherlands. In 1897, 19-year-old John Schepss came to the United States, a very bold and adventurous career for a young Dutchman at the time. On board, he met a Dutch bulb exporter who was hired as the US representative of his company. Within a few years, John Schepss established his own flower bulb import company John Scheepers. He published the book Beauty from, which later became the main source of Dutch flower bulbs in the United States. For decades, "The Beauty of Light Bulbs" has been published as a hardcover book, with beautiful watercolor illustrations and passionate romantic poetry, describing the beauty of flowers and the importance of gardens in people's lives.
