Kentucky Opera was founded in 1952 by Moritz von Bomhard and was designated a Kentucky State Opera House in 1982. The theater was held in the Columbia Auditorium before the 1964 theater moved to Brown Theater. The company began making selected works at the Whitney Hall of the Kentucky Arts Center in 1984, and moved all major performances to Whitney in 2000. The Louisville Orchestra is responsible for all performances, while the Louisville Ballet performs in situations where opera needs classical dance. Under the leadership of Bomhard, Kentucky Opera grew from a smaller organization into a strong, innovative and respected company, which was one of the oldest regional opera companies in the United States, to provide quality work to its audience. The Bomhard Theater at the Kentucky Arts Center is named after him. After 30 years in office, Bombhard retired in 1982.
