Tillies Flowers tradition of quality and excellence began in 1876, when Amos Quechmeister came from Germany to settle in Wichita and open the Harry Street greenhouse at the corner of Harry and Lulu. Amos started a small business selling plants with fresh vegetables and litter that he and his wife, Eliza, cared for around the clock, seven days a week. The original Harry Street greenhouse has met local demand for quality vegetables and plants. While Tilly enjoyed working with vegetables and plants, she loved working with fresh flowers. It was because of the young Tilly's insistence that the Harry Street greenhouse began to offer fresh flowers to its customers. Eventually, Tilly's name became synonymous with fresh, quality flowers, so the Harry Street greenhouse became Tillies Flowers in the 1920s when Tilly herself started running the store.
