Tri-State Museum museum journey began in 1955, when Mrs. Roy Williams of Hammond, MT, donated her late husband western collection along with $1000 to establish a museum. Tri-State Museum had gathered the collection for his personal enjoyment and that of his friends, but Mrs. Williams recognized its broader significance. In the early 1950s, she reached out to several Belle Fourche businessmen and community leaders, offering the collection. The current museum building, which opened in 2004, is part of a complex that includes the Center of the Nation Visitor Center. In 2013, a separate storage facility was added to house museum artifacts.
